気になる表現があった。

この文章の中の due である。

due で思い浮かぶのは、「〜のために」
の due to であった。それから、意味が
たくさんあること。

... polar bears, who have lost their hunting grounds due.

この箇所の due は「〜のために」の
意味ではないし、何だか due はなくても
意味は通りそうに思えてしまった。
なくても良さそうな due はなぜあるのか
調べることにした。

due はロングマンのオンライン辞書に
よると、

とある。

due は形容詞で、意味は「特定の時間に
起きたり到着したりする予定の」となる。

not before noun

は、名詞の前にはこない、ということで
ある。

この意味が分かると、due は何とも味の
あることが分かって決して欠かせない
言葉であることに気づいた。

の部分は、due は後ろから hunting
grounds を修飾している。この修飾関係
も英語らしい。

hunting grounds due

の意味は、「気温上昇と海氷の消失が
なければ予定通りにあったはずの猟場」、
と捉えていいように思った。
